Journalist suggests 27-year-old goalkeeper would absolutely love to join Tottenham amid transfer links
TalkSPORT journalist Alex Crook has suggested that Brentford goalkeeper David Raya would absolutely love to join Tottenham Hotspur.
Spurs’ need for a Hugo Lloris replacement came to the forefront once again yesterday as the Frenchman made a costly error in the north London derby.
Lloris has been a loyal servant to the club and racked up a total of 440 appearances for Tottenham since making the switch from Lyon over 10 years ago.
While the 36-year-old has always had the odd mistake in his game, he’s becoming less and less reliable between the sticks.
Tottenham are in the market for a long-term successor for their club captain and The Telegraph reported last week that Spurs’ scouts view the Brentford man as a possible option, alongside Jordan Pickford.
Now, Crook claims that Raya would be keen on the idea of moving to north London, but adds that a January switch is unlikely.
Raya would love to join Tottenham
“With the greatest respect in the world to Brentford, I’m sure if he [Raya] could make the step up to Spurs he’d grab it with both gloves,” Crook told GiveMeSport.
“Again, I think probably one to keep an eye on in the summer, as opposed to now.”
Raya has been exceptional for Thomas Frank’s side ever since they joined the Premier League for the first time in the club’s history.
At 27, he would certainly represent a good option for Tottenham in terms of a goalkeeper who is capable of replacing Lloris for the long-term future.
Frank has already ruled out the possibility of Raya leaving this month but with his deal set to run until the end of next season, he could become a serious option for Tottenham to replace Lloris.
TBR View: Raya would be the ideal Loris replacement
Raya has not only proven to be a very capable shot stopper, but he is also comfortable with the ball at his feet.
Lloris has been a brilliant goalkeeper for Spurs over the years but he often puts his side under unnecessary pressure due to his poor distribution.
In Raya, Spurs would be getting a goalkeeper who would allow them to play out more comfortably from the back. With just over 18-months left on his current deal, Spurs could also sign him for a cut-price over the summer.
