Journalist hints 'complete' Arsenal attacking target will now join Manchester United instead
Arsenal are one of the many teams reportedly in pursuit of Netherlands international Cody Gakpo.
No surprise really. Gakpo followed up his heroics at club level with a breakthrough World Cup campaign.
Arsenal could do with bolstering their attacking ranks. Gabriel Jesus’ injury means they’re short up front.
In addition, the Gunners reportedly sought a new senior winger in summer, before switching attention to a new midfielder.
In the end, Arsenal failed to get any late signings over the line. Not that it has affected them in the first half of the season.
But with the January transfer window looming, the Gunners could well try again on both fronts.
And Gakpo would be a superb addition to the Arsenal ranks.
However, a new report has suggested that the 23-year-old has his heart set on a move to Manchester United.
This is according to Dean Jones. The journalist hinted it’s only a matter of time before the Red Devils get their man.
‘Yes, we have heard this one a few times before,’ he wrote on GiveMeSport.
‘But the player is already convinced of the idea of joining Manchester United and so we wait for the financial details to fall into place.
‘Gakpo has an understanding of Erik Ten Hag and what he is trying to achieve at United, where he has impressed with his coaching methods.’
One to watch in the coming weeks
If true, this is bad news for Arsenal, who could’ve got themselves one of the most ‘complete‘ young attackers in world football.
At the same time, Mikel Arteta has decent coverage on the left wing, Gakpo’s main position.
Arsenal arguably need a centre-forward and a right-winger more, though Gakpo can play across the front line.
Nonetheless, it’s just a report. We’ll see what happens in the coming weeks as the market gets in full swing.
