Report: Real Madrid now ready to bid for 'complete' £80m forward Liverpool watched in Qatar

Liverpool could see any hopes they have of signing Cody Gakpo scuppered by Spanish giants, Real Madrid, according to The Daily Mail.

Gakpo has emerged as one of the hottest prospects in Europe this year. A number of fine performances for PSV, coupled with a fine World Cup with The Netherlands, has seen Gakpo’s stock rise.

A whole host of clubs are thought to be keen on signing him. Among them are English sides Liverpool and Manchester United. The PL giants are both hoping they can beat the rush to sign Gakpo, with reports in recent days suggesting the pair are the top two options right now.

However, the Daily Mail has bad news for Liverpool fans hoping to see Gakpo in red. They report how Real Madrid are now getting involved in the race and could make a bid for Gakpo in January.

Madrid’s interest will come as a blow but not a surprise to Liverpool or United. The Spanish outfit are looking for a long-term Karim Benzema replacement and Gakpo fits the profile. Indeed, Rio Ferdinand even claimed Gakpo could fetch as much as £80m in the current market.

Along with Gakpo, Madrid are also trying to sign Jude Bellingham in front of Liverpool as well.

TBR’s View: Liverpool and United will appeal to Gakpo

While the lure of Real Madrid will always be there for any player, so will the appeal of playing for an English giant like Liverpool.

We sometimes forget how big both clubs are over in Holland, the Premier League is often seen as the place to be. Indeed, more players from Holland go to Barcelona than Madrid in history, with plenty ending up in England.

Gakpo, of course, is a fine player who fits in anywhere. But you do feel one of Liverpool or United would suit him that bit better. Lauded as being a ‘complete‘ player, Liverpool have watched Gakpo closely all winter.
