John Obi Mikel says Moises Caicedo is doing something at Chelsea even Claude Makelele never could

Moises Caicedo is having an impressive season for Chelsea so far, and John Obi Mikel has singled out one aspect of his game that sets him apart from the rest.

Chelsea signed Caicedo in 2023 for £100million, and given the price tag there was a lot of expectation on his shoulders to immediately deliver.

While the midfielder had a relatively slow start to life at Stamford Bridge, he has quickly kicked on over the past year to showcase his true quality.

That has been clear this season, with Caicedo being heavily praised for his Chelsea performances as he looks to continue developing and helping the team win trophies.

John Obi Mikel believes Moises Caicedo’s goals set him apart

Chelsea have often had brilliant defensive midfielders from Claude Makelele and Mikel to N’Golo Kante. But the one common theme they all had was that they didn’t chip in with too many goals.

Caicedo appears to be ending that trend, and after his incredible goal against Liverpool this past weekend, Mikel had nothing but praise for him on the Obi One Podcast.

“We have to talk about him again, Caicedo, how good is he. Coming from the player we watched in his first game, everyone said ‘what a waste of money,’ But the kid knows exactly who he is.

“After every game, what I love about him, back then when he had the worst games at the club, after every game he knelt down and prayed.

“He believed in something, and it’s good that he kept his belief, he’s been absolutely brilliant, he’s chipping in goals, he’s scoring goals, that’s something I never did, something Claude Makelele never did, he’s scoring goals.”

Caicedo has already scored six times for the club, three of which came this season, while Makelele only scored twice throughout his 217 Chelsea appearances.

Caicedo opened the scoring against Liverpool with a brilliant effort from outside the box. While Cody Gakpo equalised, a late goal from Estevao Willian gave Chelsea the three points.

Moises Caicedo named the best midfielder in the Premier League

Caicedo has been delivering consistent performances for the Blues this season, and even though Chelsea haven’t always been at their best, his individual efforts haven’t gone unnoticed.

Gary Neville discussed the midfielder on his Sky Sports podcast and made it clear he doesn’t think there is anyone better in the Premier League right now.

“He’s the best midfield player in the league at this moment in time.”

“And I think I’m comfortable saying that. Gravenberch last season, and maybe Declan Rice and Rodri obviously, for the last few years.

“But now, I think at this time, we can say that Caicedo is the best midfield player in the league, and he’s performing like that.”

Caicedo is starting to prove that the fee Chelsea paid for him was well worth it, and given he’s now adding consistent goals to his game, that belief will only grow.
