Chris Wood and Bruno Guimaraes’ goals last night helped Newcastle United pick up an impressive win over Southampton, but it’s Joe Willock’s celebration that has become a hot topic of discussion.
The ex-Arsenal man started in the middle of the park alongside Jonjo Shelvey and Guimaraes. Newcastle didn’t quite have the control in the game that they’d have liked in the first half.
That forced Eddie Howe to change the shape at half-time. Shelvey and Guimaraes played as two sixes and Willock was given the freedom to push forward. That really helped him and although he didn’t score, he was absolutely fantastic.
However, Willock has been the talk of the town for something that has nothing to do with his performance.
Joe Willock jokes about his knee-slide fail after Bruno Guimaraes’ goal
Newcastle went into the break with the scores level at 1-1. The Magpies really improved in the second half and it didn’t take long before they got themselves in front.
Guimaraes managed to divert a corner into the back of the net with an outrageous backheel. It’s one of the best goals you’ll see all season and his teammates’ reactions showed just how happy all of them were for him.
Willock, who was probably a bit too happy, decided to knee slide in front of the fans. The St Mary’s Stadium pitch was having none of it and the ex-Arsenal man almost fell on his face.
The Englishman uploaded the video on Instagram and captioned it “RIP to my knees” alongside a bunch of laughing emojis.

TBR View:
As hilarious as Willock falling over after a failed knee-slide attempt is, the former Arsenal man deserves enormous credit for the way he played yesterday.
He was incredible throughout and he really did step up in the second half.
To top it all off, in the 95th minute of the game, the 22-year-old put his body on the line to deny Che Adams from close range. That got the Magpies their win and they really are on a roll now.
Willock and Newcastle take on Chelsea next and a good result there will surely send a message to all the clubs around them in the Premier League table.
