'I hope to stay': 25-year-old says he now wants to stay at Newcastle for many years
Newcastle United star Joelinton has expressed his love for the Magpies and desire to remain at St James’ Park long-term.
The 25-year-old is Newcastle’s record signing, joining for a reported £40million in July 2019.
For quite a while, Joelinton struggled at St James’ Park.
Previously deployed largely up front or on the left wing at Newcastle, the Brazilian often looked lost.
But now, with Magpies boss Eddie Howe deploying him in attacking midfield, Joelinton is thriving.
His efforts have helped Newcastle surge up the Premier League table and towards the top half.
It’s been a remarkable transformation for player and club alike.
Just six weeks ago, Newcastle looked almost certain to go down.
On January 23, the Magpies travelled to Leeds United with just one league win to their name all season.
Even though the takeover revitalised the club and the city, there were still alarm bells ringing on the pitch.
But now, Newcastle have six wins and 10 draws in the league, and sit 14th on 28 points.
They are now closer to the top half (33 points) than the bottom three (21 points).
Joelinton, speaking to i, is delighted to be involved in Newcastle’s resurgence, and wants to continue being a part of it.
“Newcastle is a massive club and now it’s coming back,” he said.
“We all know the owners’ ambitions. They want to be big – the biggest club in the world – and when you listen to them you think it can be.
“Now everyone in the world is talking about Newcastle and what it can be.
“In Brazil they know it now and I’m happy to be here and I hope to stay for many years here to be part of it.”
