Jamie Carragher says player Tottenham and Newcastle reportedly want to sign thinks he's as good as Phil Foden

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has lavished praise on James Maddison ahead of the announcement of England’s World Cup squad.

Maddison is reportedly a target for Tottenham and Newcastle United ahead of the January transfer window amid his dwindling contract situation.

Speaking on the Overlap, Carragher said he would take Maddison to the World Cup and said the midfielder will believe he is as good as all the other players in the England setup in his position.

Carragher on Maddison

He said: “Why would you not watch him? Right now he’s playing as well as anybody in those positions.

“I watched him on Saturday and I know you don’t choose someone over one game, his performances have been going back for 18 months. But he’s got too much quality.

“I think it’d be difficult for someone who has not been in the setup for two years for England to go into the squad and play, but he’s one I think could.

“I think he’s got the arrogance and I use that as a positive, he has the football arrogance and I think he’ll believe he’s as good as the players you just named [Phil Foden, Mason Mount and Jack Grealish].

“I’d 100% pick him.”

Maddison’s situation will be one of the main talking points when Southgate names his squad to take to Qatar at 2pm today (Thursday).

Most fans will agree on the majority of the players, although there are some fitness concerns over the likes of Kyle Walker and Kalvin Phillips.

Maddison is the kind of wildcard England fans always want to see in the squad, but he has just the one cap to his name and has been ignored by Gareth Southgate repeatedly thereafter.
