‘Super intelligent’: BBC pundit so impressed with ‘tenacious’ Tottenham target, thinks he’s got no weaknesses

Tottenham Hotspur will be concentrating on their massive Premier League clash against Liverpool today.

However, they’ll still have one eye on how some of their potential transfer targets are getting on.

Speaking on Match of the Day, Danny Murphy was very impressed with Leicester City’s James Maddison.

Maddison produced both assists as Leicester defeated Everton at Goodison Park.

It’s a result that lifts Brendan Rodgers’ side up to 13th after spending much of the season in the relegation zone.

Spurs have been linked with Maddison on a number of occasions.

Pete O’Rourke believes that Tottenham are considering a bid for Maddison next summer.

Leicester have previously valued Maddison at £60m, which would be a considerable outlay for Spurs.

His performance yesterday once again stole the headlines, and couldn’t have been timed better with the England squad for the World Cup being announced next week.

Murphy seriously impressed with Maddison

Speaking on Match of the Day (5/11 11:40pm) yesterday, Murphy waxed lyrical about the 25-year-old.

“It’s bizarre really, I’ve been championing him for quite a long time now,” said Murphy.

“I think he’s a super intelligent player, he’s got all the attributes, we’ve seen them many times, he can play in any position really, which is a great asset to his game.

“For me, if Gareth (Southgate) doesn’t choose him, it can’t be from a football perspective.

“His football is that good, how can he not be in that 26-man squad?”

“I think as well, there was maybe about a year ago, talk about his defensive (capabilities), but physically he looks really good.

“He’s doing his defending, he’s tenacious in the press, he’s playing sometimes in a wide position and having to get back and defend. So, there’s no weakness.”

Tottenham are seriously missing an attacking playmaker who can be used in midfield.

Antonio Conte has really missed Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison, and his switch to a three-man midfield has looked ineffective.

Spurs have looked toothless without the attacking pair, and Maddison would seriously improve Conte’s options.

Murphy wouldn’t have been the only person impressed with Maddison yesterday.

He now faces a nervous wait to see if he’s done enough to head to Qatar later this month.
