Jamie Carragher picks the two signings which Liverpool would ‘definitely’ love to make on deadline day

Given how fast Liverpool’s move to sign Federico Chiesa progressed, there’s reason to hope that the club could still make another addition on deadline day.

Liverpool were linked with Cesar Huerta, a Mexican winger, shortly after sealing their deal for Chiesa, a player who would seemingly be loaned straight back out should he arrive.

However, in terms of the club’s immediate priority, a defensive midfielder will still be the position discussed by a lot of fans on Merseyside, a signing that has eluded the club since last summer.

Richard Hughes attempted to remedy that problem with Martin Zubimendi’s arrival, albeit for that pursuit to end in disappointment.

But when speaking on Sky Sports on deadline day, Jamie Carragher admitted that he’d love Liverpool to go back in for someone similar at the last minute.

Jamie Carragher thinks Arne Slot still needs two key signings on deadline day

As well as signing a number six, Carragher also urged Liverpool to address their lack of numbers at centre-back.

Liverpool sold Sepp van den Berg for a good price this summer, and it perhaps would be gratifying if they were able to reinvest those funds late-on.

Carragher said: “I think Liverpool are still short, not in terms of numbers, but in terms of quality at centre-back and the holding midfield position.

“We know Arne Slot feels that as there was a deal which fell down for Zubimendi a few weeks ago.

“They are definitely two areas which Liverpool would try and fill. But I don’t think they will try and get anything today or panic buy and buy someone at the last minute.

“I think if someone comes for the right price they will do it but I don’t think they will be getting involved with a bidding war or a player who comes out of nowhere.

Liverpool not chasing deadline day for Alan Varela

Overnight, rumours began swirling that Liverpool were attempting to sign Alan Varela from FC Porto late in the window.

Many of the club’s supporters felt as if Varela was a credible alternative to Zubimendi once that deal fell down in recent weeks.

However, Liverpool aren’t in talks to sign Varela right now – even if that is the sort of signing that Carragher is hoping the side achieve.

Of course, it remains to be seen if Liverpool will do anything late on, as it would certainly seem as if the club are in the financial position to do so.

And in truth, if Hughes isn’t active today, it could be a considered mistake in the weeks and months to come.
