Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville disagree on what Mohamed Salah’s problem is right now

Mohamed Salah’s recent struggles at Liverpool have been discussed by Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville.

Manchester United handed the Reds their fourth straight loss on Sunday, with Salah once again far from his best.

The Liverpool winger ‘hasn’t seemed right’ during the opening two months of the campaign and is without a goal in his last five matches across all competitions.

Salah is an outstanding talent, but his form is concerning and has now opened up a debate between Neville and Carragher.

Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville disagree over Mohamed Salah’s slow Liverpool start

Speaking on The Gary Neville Podcast, the ex-Liverpool defender suggested the Egyptian had lost some of his sharpness.

He said: “You know, he goes through these little runs. Now, when he first came and he had blister and pace, him and Mane, that’s not there so much. But he still had the sharpness about him. I’m not quite sure that sharpness is still there.

Neville disagreed, saying: “I still think he looks quite sharp,” to which Carragher responded: “I’m not sure. I don’t know.

“I think he looks sharp in those little areas where you’d want him to look sharp in the last 18, 20 yards of the pitch. But as the ball comes to the back post on two or three occasions, for instance, the Wirtz assist for him that would have been an assist at Chelsea, and you think he’s got to finish that. Today, there’s two chances at the back post.”

By this stage last season, Salah already had five goals and five assists in the Premier League.

Exactly why the 33-year-old has lost some of his spark remains up for debate, but one theory is the big changes to Liverpool’s squad this summer.

Daniel Sturridge suggests why Mohamed Salah is struggling

Commenting on Salah’s woes in 2025/26 earlier this month, Daniel Sturridge pointed towards a lack of chemistry in Arne Slot’s side.

He said: “They’re not the same team they were last year. You can tell the chemistry isn’t there right now.”

Liverpool tried to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold with Jeremie Frimpong this summer, but the Dutchman has failed to have a meaningful impact at Anfield so far.

Cody Gakpo was excited by Frimpong earlier this season, but two months later, the right-back has played just 21 minutes of the Reds’ last four league games, losing his place to Conor Bradley.

But Slot doesn’t seem overly convinced by Bradley either, finishing the 2-1 defeat to Manchester United with Dominik Szoboszlai in a makeshift full-back role.

That decision has not gone down too well with ex-Red Ryan Babel.

Speaking to Liverpool.com, he said: “Bradley has so much potential and he brings so many things — let him play. Give him four, five, six games in a row because he also has to learn Premier League football.

“If you think he is not good enough then you have to bring in Frimpong, but I’m not a fan of Szoboszlai playing there. He is a top midfield player and if he is better than Wirtz, then he has to play there.”
