Robbie Savage makes controversial statement about Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah and Kylian Mbappe

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah came close to the Ballon d’Or this time around, finishing fourth – but it wasn’t quite enough to win the gong.

The Egyptian star has been talked about regularly as being one of the best players in the sport over the past decade, winning every trophy possible with Liverpool, as well as becoming the fourth-highest goalscorer in Premier League history.

He’s recently overtaken Andy Cole, and having hit one of his highest performance levels even at the age of 32 last season, the wide forward still has plenty in the tank despite moving for £34million almost 10 years ago.

He may not be on the levels that Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi once were, but Salah can comfortably say he’s been in the conversation for one of the world’s best players over the years.

And that has led to Robbie Savage stating that he’s still better than arguably the world’s best player on form at the moment in Real Madrid and France hero, Kylian Mbappe.

Robbie Savage claims Liverpool star Mohamed Salah is better than Kylian Mbappe

Mbappe has started this season in incredible fashion.

Nine goals to start the La Liga campaign in just eight games sees Real Madrid top of the table, whilst five goals in just two Champions League games means that he’s only blanked in one game for Los Blancos this season.

However, Savage believes that the Frenchman is still not near the standard of Salah, despite Mbappe’s roaring start to his second campaign in the Spanish capital – ranking the Liverpool legend ahead of the 93-time France cap, who also has scored in each of his last five Les Bleus games.

The former Premier League midfielder went on TikTok, via Daily Mail Sport, in a knockout-style format to determine the best player in the world, and he chose Salah ahead of Mbappe.

This season, that would be incredibly harsh given that Salah hasn’t made the best start to the campaign at Liverpool, whilst Mbappe’s record of 14 goals in 10 games speaks for itself. But over the past few years, Salah has been incredible in delivering Liverpool their Premier League success.

Liverpool Mohamed Salah has been better than Kylian Mbappe over the past five years

That could be a part of the reasoning behind Savage’s decision.

Barring last season and the early years of his career, Mbappe has spent most of his time at Paris Saint-Germain. For many, that will be seen as an easier challenge than spending time at Liverpool due to their domination of France, and so goal tallies in his favour may be much more skewed.

However, there is little to knock the Frenchman from his goal tally since the start of the 2020/21 season, even in comparison with Salah’s.

It’s a tough choice. Mbappe has not reached a Champions League final in the past five years, being on the losing side in the 2019-20 final, whilst Salah also lost in the 2021-22 edition.

League titles are evidently in Mbappe’s favour, with PSG having a monopoly over other French teams, whilst Salah has come up against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City and some incredibly strong Premier League teams.

If it’s down to natural talent, Mbappe edges it. But Salah’s ability to lead teams on his own and win titles may just have proven Savage right with his controversial statement.
