Liverpool have certainly improved on the field under Arne Slot and it now appears as if there’s been a slight change in approach behind the scenes.
The Reds were involved in a big transfer tussle with Chelsea over Moises Caicedo back in the summer of last year, which saw the South American join the Blues for £115 million.
This is a move that doesn’t appear to have paid off so far for the London club with criticism coming his way in a number of matches. Gary Neville even called Caicedo ‘shocking’ in one particular game.
Liverpool weren’t the only club interested in signing him though, as Arsenal had Caicedo as their back-up plan if they failed to sign Declan Rice.
Arne Slot is very happy with the midfielders at this disposal right now as Ryan Gravenberch continues to thrive in the number 6 role.
And, James Pearce seems to feel that Arne Slot‘s policy is a lot different to Jurgen Klopp’s, especially when it comes to Caicedo…
What James Pearce has been told by people at Liverpool about Arne Slot and Moises Caicedo
No one can question Slot after the start he’s made to life on Merseyside with a perfect start to the Premier League secured.
The Reds looked at signing Martin Zubimendi during the summer transfer window in the hope of using him in the 6 position, but he rejected a move so nothing materialised.
Now, James Pearce has revealed what he’s been told about Liverpool’s new policy behind the scenes whilst speaking on the Athletic FC podcast.
“I think it is really interesting the profile of what Liverpool are after and what Slot wants in that position has changed since Klopp.
“Because I spoke to someone at Liverpool last week that said if they had signed Caicedo last summer, would he really have fitted what Slot wants in terms of a highly technical player who is able to operate in really tight spaces and is press-resistant and is so good at finding space between the lines, things that Gravenberch did on Sunday.
“I think there is a big question there because Slot wants a different type.
“While Klopp wanted a destroyer in that position, someone who is physical, to break up play.
“So the whole of the midfield has changed now with two midfielders sitting deep and one pushing on.
“At the minute Gravenberch looks like he could be the answer.”

How has Ryan Gravenberch been this season?
As Liverpool fans will know, Gravenberch has been one of the surprise shining lights already this season.
Gabriel Agbonlahor called Gravenberch ‘outstanding’ for his performance against Manchester United, and even stated that he may have retired Casemiro in the process.
Missing out on Zubimendi has actually been a blessing in disguise as he would have probably been the starter in the 6 position, which would have halted the Dutchman’s progress.
Wataru Endo is another option in that position but he struggled at times last season and is clearly not rated enough by Slot as he has opted to use Gravenberch over him.
