‘He’s absolutely shocking’… Gary Neville couldn’t believe how poor Chelsea star was on the ball today

Gary Neville did not hold back in his criticism of Moises Caicedo as Chelsea were beaten by Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday, insisting that he was shocking at times at Wembley.

It may have only been in the final minutes of extra time when Liverpool came up with the winner against the Blues, but Mauricio Pochettino will expect to face plenty of questions over how exactly they failed to get the job done.

While Jurgen Klopp could largely only throw on younger players, Chelsea could bring on the likes of Noni Madueke, Mykhaylo Mudryk and Christopher Nkunku.

Gary Neville criticises Moises Caicedo as Chelsea lose Carabao Cup final

Ultimately, a number of big players failed to turn up – once again this season. And Moises Caicedo was one of those who had a really poor day.

Caicedo committed a nasty foul on Ryan Gravenberch during the first-half. And Gary Neville was incredibly critical of the Ecuador international’s quality on the ball.

Speaking to Sky Sports (broadcast on 25/2; 3:16), Neville suggested that Caicedo needed to do a lot better after an overhit pass saw an attack break down.

And his criticism would be even stronger in the second-half.

“That’s really poor from Caicedo. You mentioned before the game in your announcements the £200 million midfield. They’ve both shown so much promise. But they’ve yet to reach the heights individually, or certainly not as a unit,” he initially said.

“I remember watching Caicedo when he was at Brighton, you thought he was actually quite good on the ball. But you watch him here at Chelsea, and he’s absolutely shocking at times in possession,” Neville added after the break.

Sickener for the Blues

This loss is going to take some getting over for Chelsea. Mauricio Pochettino looked devastated collecting his runners-up medal. And several players would have felt similar.

This felt like an opportunity for the Blues to go some way towards putting the disappointment of the last few months behind them. But ultimately, Chelsea could not beat a Liverpool side which went into extra-time with a number of younger players in their side.

Caicedo was signed to help elevate the Blues again. But there are worryingly few signs that his signing is going to do that.
