‘It’s time’: Darren Bent urges David Moyes to start picking ‘quality’ West Ham United player regularly now

Darren Bent believes that West Ham United manager David Moyes needs to start picking Gianluca Scamacca more regularly.

Speaking on TalkSPORT, Bent was asked about West Ham’s forward conundrum.

Before Saturday’s win against Wolves, Michail Antonio had started all-but-one of the Hammers’ Premier League matches.

However, he’d only scored once in seven league appearances.

Scamacca came into the starting line-up on Saturday and opened his Premier League account with a thunderous strike.

Captain Declan Rice admitted after the game he wasn’t surprised by Scamacca’s goal because of how he trains.

Bent now believes that Moyes needs to be starting Scamacca more as he ‘thinks he’ll score goals’.

Scamacca has mainly been utilised in the Europa Conference League, where he already has three goals.

His record in Italy last season suggests he’ll score plenty at the London Stadium too.

The 23-year-old scored 16 times in Serie A for Sassuolo, and it’s no surprise he earned a £35.5m move in the summer.

Moyes needs to start Scamacca

Speaking on TalkSPORT, Bent said: “He’s (Scamacca’s) someone who’s impressed me since he’s been there.

“I know he’s played a lot of games in the Europa Conference (League), but when called upon he has scored goals.

“That finish at the weekend, outside of his boot, and it took a slight nick off a defender’s head.

“But I think he’s somebody now who needs to be given a run of games.

“He scored a lot of goals last season for Sassuolo, and I think he’ll be looking to get himself into the team when Antonio’s their first pick.

“But I think it’s time now to give Scamacca a go, and I think he’ll score goals.”

The ‘quality’ centre-forward is a powerful target man, but also capable of scoring wonderful goals with his feet.

He demonstrated this at the weekend, and he’s already a regular in the Italian national team.

Moyes will have to work out if there’s a way to start both Scamacca and Antonio.

Until then, Scamacca deserves a run of games in the Premier League to help lift West Ham away from the bottom three.
