Aston Villa star Emi Martinez has shared an interesting insight on how things are at the club following Steven Gerrard’s appointment.
The Villans looked really poor under Dean Smith at the start of the season. It was strange to see them struggle as much as they did, but Gerrard has well and truly turned things around since his arrival.
Martinez has been a key player for Villa for quite some time now. He is a regular under Gerrard and he has noticed something about his management that is very different to anything he had seen in his career before.
Gerrard is not the one who does all the talking, it’s one of his assistants.
What Emi Martinez has noticed about Steven Gerrard’s management
Martinez sat down for a chat with Ben Foster on Amazon Prime Video Sport’s official YouTube channel this week and he has revealed the impact Michael Beale has had behind the scenes.
He said: “It’s the first time in 14-15 years of my career that the assistant coach does all the talking, Michael Beale.
“He knows so much about football, it’s just incredible. He does all the training sessions, he takes all the important meetings, obviously Stevie G talks (too).
“In every club, the manager does all the talking and the assistant helps. With Michael, we felt, him and Stevie G are both the managers.”

TBR View:
That really is unusual, isn’t it?
The manager is the boss at every football club and he’s the one who calls all the shots behind the scenes. At Villa, it looks like things are slightly different.
However, that isn’t a bad thing at all. Gerrard stepping back during training sessions and Beale stepping up hasn’t had any sort of negative impact at Villa.
The Villans have looked really good since the legendary Englishman’s arrival and there’s no reason for them to change what’s happening behind the scenes.
