‘Incredible quality’: Cesar Azpilicueta raves about £36m World Cup star Tottenham want to sign

Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta has raved about World Cup star and club teammate Hakim Ziyech to the Guardian – after claims Tottenham Hotspur want to sign him.

Spurs were eyeing a late move for Ziyech over the summer, with Toni Juanmarti reporting that Antonio Conte’s men were close to agreeing personal terms with the winger just days before the deadline.

Bryan Gil looked set to head out on loan but was forced to remain in north London as Spurs couldn’t secure a replacement. Ziyech would have certainly fit the bill but of course, he remained at Chelsea.

The £36 million man has only managed nine appearances for the Blues this season, with seven of them coming as a substitute. But he’s been brilliant for Morocco at the World Cup and journalist Simon Phillips told GiveMeSport over the weekend that Chelsea are ready to sell him

Morocco are set to meet Spain in the last-16 of the tournament today after they surprisingly topped their group over both Croatia and Belgium.

Ziyech will face-off against his club teammate Azpilicueta today and the Spaniard has raved about his ability ahead of the clash.

Azpilicueta on Ziyech

Speaking to the Guardian, Azpilicueta says Ziyech boasts ‘incredible quality’ in his left foot.

“Morocco are very difficult to create chances against. Clear ideas, strong up front, quality in midfield, full-backs who are offensive, with ability,” he said.

“They got seven points in the group; no one got more and not many got seven [only the Netherlands and England].

“They only let in one goal and allowed five shots, beat Belgium, drew with Croatia. And they have Hakim Ziyech, who has a left foot of incredible quality. He’s in a great moment, confident. We’ll have to ensure he’s in the game as little as possible.”

Ziyech has certainly impressed at the World Cup and has been an integral part of Morocco’s success.

The Chelsea star has provided a goal and an assist in three appearances in Qatar. The 29-year-old has struggled to regain the brilliant form he produced at Ajax during his career at Chelsea so far.

Spurs fans will know the threat Ziyech poses after his brilliant Champions League goal against them back in 2019. Ziyech could be a brilliant option for Spurs as Football.London reports they are on the lookout for ‘quality’ Dejan Kulusevski cover.

He’s struggled massively during his time at Chelsea but if Spurs could complete a cut-price move for the winger, it could turn out to be an astute piece of business. Ziyech is clearly a talented player but his move to Stamford Bridge just hasn’t worked out.
