'Impressed me': Tottenham Hotspur told they have a player who was just like Zlatan Ibrahimovic when he was younger

Former Hamburg and Fulham striker Mladen Petric has compared Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min to Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

In an interview with the Athletic, Petric was talking about his former teammate.

Son and Petric were strike partners at Hamburg, but were at opposite ends of their career.

Petric had just come off the back of a successful Europa League campaign, scoring six goals on their way to the semi-finals.

Son was working his way through the German club’s academy after a loan spell back in South Korea.

However, Petric was clearly very impressed with Son, and has compared him to Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Petric believes Son’s ‘self-confidence’ when he was a youngster is what makes him so similar to the legendary Zlatan.

However, their style of play couldn’t be more different, despite both players becoming fantastic attackers.

In his interview with The Athletic, Petric said: “What impressed me also was even in his first season he was full of self-confidence.

“He had so much self-confidence it was almost like Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

“He didn’t act like that — absolutely not, always a very kind person with both feet on the ground.

“But when he was talking to the other players his age, his friends, he would tell them, ‘I will become one of the best players in the world’, and would say, ‘I’m better than this guy’ — even people who had had good careers.”

Son will be relying on that self-confidence this season, having had a slow start to the campaign at Spurs.

The South Korean has played every game for Antonio Conte’s side this season, but only scored three goals.

These all came against Leicester City off the bench, and he was described as a ‘manager’s dream’ after the match.

Last season’s Golden Boot winner is an incredibly popular player at Spurs, and Daniel Levy is also a huge fan.

The comparisons to Zlatan Ibrahimovic are a surprise given Son’s more humble nature.

However, that determination is one of the key reasons why the forward has reached the incredible levels he has.
