Arsenal star Gabriel Martinelli was shown a bizarre red card last night against Wolves at Molineux and the Brazilian has now had his say.
The Gunners went into the game looking for their first win of 2022. Mikel Arteta’s men started really well and Gabriel Magalhaes gave them a deserved lead after 25 minutes.
The North Londoners got better as the game went on and everything was completely under control. However, Martinelli was shown two yellow cards in the space of a few seconds and he had to walk.
Arsenal dug deep and held onto their lead in the end. Martinelli is proud of the way his teammates performed after he left the pitch, but his anger about the red card is overly evident.
Angry Martinelli posts on Instagram after his red card
Martinelli’s red card is really a bizarre one.
The Brazilian definitely committed two bookable offences, but the referee played advantage on the initial foul and instead of bringing it back, he took Martinelli’s second tackle into account as well and booked him twice.
Arteta was visibly irate on the touchline and you can understand why. Martinelli too was not a happy man either and he made it clear on Instagram that he’s ‘upset’ with Michael Oliver’s decision.
He wrote in his post: “I’m upset because it’s difficult to accept that as a red card. But I am proud the team fought to keep the result and the win.”

Nobody can really argue about the fact that Martinelli committed two bookable offences. However, we’ve never seen a player receive two yellow cards for something that happened in the same phase of play.
Arteta was happy with the win but was baffled by the decision that reduced his team down to ten men. He demanded an explanation from the officials and revealed he will soon have a meeting with PGMOL to discuss why so many decisions are going against his side. (Arsenal.com)
Martinelli is set to miss Arsenal’s next Premier League game but it will be interesting to see if the Gunners will appeal his sending off. It’s unlikely that it’ll be overturned but it’s worth a try considering how thin Arteta’s squad already is.
