‘I’m still amazed’: Journalist still can’t believe £40m player hasn’t signed for Tottenham

David Raya is set to sign for Arsenal this summer, but in another world, he would already be a Tottenham player by now.

Indeed, at the beginning of the summer, Spurs were strongly linked with Raya, and it was even reported that the player himself was very keen to join the north London club.

Of course, that deal didn’t quite work out as Brentford valued the Spaniard at £40m and Tottenham didn’t want to go in for the goalkeeper at that price.

Raya is now set for Arsenal instead, much to the bemusement of Graeme Bailey, who stated on the Talking Transfers Podcast that he’s amazed that Raya hasn’t ended up signing for Tottenham this summer.

Bailey amazed

The journalist spoke about Raya not joining Spurs.

“He’s taken the chance. He believes he will be able to usurp Aaron Ramsdale. I don’t think he will. I’m slightly surprised. I’m still amazed that Tottenham didn’t push that one over the line, one they might live to regret I think,” Bailey said.

Bitter pill to swallow

It looked as though Raya would be set for Tottenham this summer, but after that deal fell through, Spurs went for Guglielmo Vicario instead.

Now, Raya is set to join Arsenal, and that is a real bitter pill to swallow for Tottenham as the Gunners are, of course, their biggest rivals.

Tottenham, quite clearly, wanted Raya, but after stuggling to get over the hurdles to get this deal done, it must be painful to see that he’s now Arsenal-bound.

For Raya himself a move to Spurs to be number one was probably preferable to being number two at Arsenal, but sadly for all parties, this hasn’t worked out for Tottenham or Raya.
