Newcastle United surprised many people when they signed Chris Wood from Burnley after triggering his release clause last month.

The Magpies were desperate for a new striker in the January transfer window. They were linked with multiple big names, but Wood was the only one they could bring in before the window shut.

The New Zealander provides Eddie Howe’s side with a different dimension up front. He is a nuisance to opposition defenders and although he doesn’t quite score a lot of goals, the work he puts in for the team is really admirable.

As good as Wood is, almost everyone is convinced that he’ll be replaced soon. However, he isn’t ready to accept defeat.

Chris Wood: I’m ready to sign a new contract at Newcastle

In an interview with The Telegraph this week, Wood was quizzed about his plans beyond the end of this season. The striker remained adamant that he’s not going anywhere.

He said: “I know other players are going to be brought in to improve the squad, there will be other players brought in up top, but that will bring more out of me.

“I’m here to stay for the whole contract. I’d like to sign an extension. I want to be part of the journey this club is on and see where it takes me.”

Newcastle’s project is definitely an exciting one and it’s no surprise that Wood wants to be a part of it for the next few years.

However, the New Zealand international is 30 already and it is extremely unlikely that he’ll be the club’s main striker if the Magpies remain in the Premier League.

If Newcastle avoid the drop, everyone expects them to spend a ton of money on top quality players in the summer. One of the first areas they’ll look at is a prolific striker and that’s bad news for Wood.

However, his confidence and mentality deserve a ton of praise and Newcastle fans will be hoping that will help their side stay up in the Premier League at the end of this season.
