Alan Shearer has identified two positions he still believes Newcastle United need to strengthen this summer, and he believes they’re actively looking.
Eddie Howe’s side came from 1-0 down to lead 3-1 in the second half, before Man City rallied through Erling Haaland and Bernardo Silva, but Newcastle kept going and thoroughly deserved their point.

Shearer went on to talk about where Newcastle may still need to do some business before the transfer window closes next week and identified two key areas for improvement. “There are 10 days remaining in the transfer window and if Newcastle can get a couple more players in, certainly in a forward position and possibly in midfield, they would be in better shape.
“It would really enhance their chances of finishing in a better position than last season.
“I know they are actively looking and a forward is what they are trying to get in.”
Shearer identifies positions Newcastle still need to strengthen
Newcastle bringing in two new players to improve their attack and midfield is an exciting thought after their performance against Man City.
The way Allan Saint-Maximin, Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron were able to hit Pep Guardiola’s side on the break was one of the best attacking performances against Man City we’ve seen in the league for some time.
Saint-Maximin’s direct approach on the ball particularly caused problems for Man City, drawing players out of position and opening up gaps for Wilson and Almiron to run into.
His skilful work on the left-wing created enough space to dig out a cross that Almiron met in the middle for Newcastle’s first goal, before a darting central run led to an assist for Wilson, who expertly finished past Ederson.
A free-kick taking masterclass from captain Kieran Trippier gave Newcastle a two-goal advantage, but they couldn’t hold on to the three points.

Newcastle have been linked with a number of forwards this summer, but a move hasn’t come to fruition.
There’s interest in bringing Juventus forward Moise Kean in on loan, while Watford Joao Pedro has been the subject on at least one bid from the Magpies.
Any player who can complement Newcastle’s fast-moving attack is going to give opposition managers nightmares.
If Howe can also bring in another midfielder, with James Maddison a name that’s been heavily linked with a move to St. James’ Park, then Newcastle fans could be dreaming of a return to European football next season.
