Paul Merson believes Newcastle United could make a late bid to sign Leicester City star James Maddison this summer.

The Foxes star has been heavily linked with a move to St James’ Park over the last few weeks. Newcastle have reportedly made official attempts to sign him as well, but they’ve not been successful.

Reports have revealed that Newcastle United tabled two bids to sign Maddison from Leicester.

The first offer was reportedly in the region of £40 million and that was turned down. Newcastle than upped that to £50 million, but the Foxes’ response did not change. Leicester are reportedly holding out for a fee in the region of £60 million.

The rumours have calmed down since that second bid was rejected, but Merson believes an extra £10 million is nothing for Newcastle. He feels the Magpies could go in with a late bid to seal the deal.

The pundit wrote in his column on Sportskeeda: “The likes of Youri Tielemans and James Maddison have also been linked with transfers, with Arsenal and Newcastle United reportedly interested in signing the two midfielders, respectively.

“Newcastle apparently bid £50 million for Maddison earlier this summer, with Leicester set to be demanding at least £60 million to part with the England international.

“What’s £10 million extra for an extra country, eh? I believe the Magpies could come back in with a late bid.”

Maddison is arguably Leicester City’s best player at the moment and it is no surprise that the Foxes are doing everything they possibly can to keep hold of him.

The Englishman scored 18 goals and provided 12 assists in all competitions last season. He was absolutely outstanding, and he would really be a ‘sensational‘ signing for most clubs in the country this summer.

Newcastle haven’t spent crazy money yet in this window, but there’s still time. Eddie Howe could do with a few more signings, and Maddison would certainly be the biggest of the lot.

However, whether Newcastle will agree to meet Leicester’s demands remains to be seen.
