'I have a feeling': Journalist thinks a goalkeeper may well be signing for Leeds this summer
Leeds United will sign a new goalkeeper to offer cover and competition for number one Illan Meslier this summer.
That is the expectation of journalist Phil Hay, who has been speaking about the situation between the sticks at Elland Road on his podcast for the Athletic.
Hay suggests there is concern behind the scenes about how Leeds would cope if their French number one was injured for any length of time.
He says that experienced Irishman Darren Randolph has been considered, and that a veteran stopper could join before the window slams shut.
Why Are The Most Expensive Transfers Always Failures?
Leeds will sign new goalkeeper, says Hay
Hay said: “There is just that concern about if Meslier was to get injured.
“Do they have what they need to see them through the period where he’s missing?
“They had a look at Darren Randolph down at West Ham in January but didn’t do it. That is the kind of keeper that they would look for, somebody with good experience.
“I have a feeling that they might well do that.”
Leeds signed Kristoffer Klaesson last summer, and he struggled initially before impressing as a substitute against Wolves in March.
But he is 21 and there is a clear vacancy there for an older, more experienced goalkeeper to come to the club.
He could offer the benefit of his wisdom in training and also ensure it is less of an emergency if Meslier does get an injury.
