TBR Football can confirm Ange Postecoglou is the leading candidate to replace Nuno as Nottingham Forest head coach.
His camp spoke with Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis last month, and at that point, broad agreement was reached in principle over a deal.
TBR Football has learned that Nuno Espirito Santo has clashed with football chief Edu over numerous deals this summer, including Forest’s move for Douglas Luiz, which has been a significant internal issue.
Additionally, as TBR Football reported last month, Marinakis wants the club to adopt a more attack-minded approach – something Nuno was unwilling to do.
With Nuno clashing with Edu and Marinakis, sources have told TBR Football his position was seen as ‘untenable’ by numerous people within the club.

Exclusive: Ange Postecoglou ready to take Nottingham Forest job
Ange Postecoglou is ready to join Nottingham Forest and return to football just three months after Tottenham Hotspur sacked him, sources have told TBR Football’s chief correspondent, Graeme Bailey.
Talks with the former Spurs and Celtic boss are already at an advanced stage, with Marinakis a big fan of the Australian head coach.
Forest feel they should be competing for the Champions League spots, and they felt that was not coming under Nuno.
Bailey told TBR Football: “The last result for Nuno and Forest was big, the club were not happy losing at home to West Ham in that manner.
“Forest have spent heavily and expect a Champions League challenge, but they were not convinced that was coming under Nuno.
“Marinakis is a big fan of Ange and his football, and I am told talks reached an advanced stage last month, which also included Edu.
“Edu is a key figure now at Forest, and his relationship with Nuno was strained, perhaps more so than any at the club, and the situation couldn’t continue.
“My understanding is that Ange is ready to come in and take on the challenge at Forest.”
TBR Football can also reveal that Forest are doing work on other targets with Jose Mourinho, Oliver Glasner, Andoli Iriola, Mauricio Pochettino and Marco Silva all talked about – but Ange is the clear favourite.
Ange Postecoglou’s Premier League record vs Nuno Espirito Santo’s
There’s no doubt that sacking Nuno for Postecoglou is a big roll of the dice for Forest, with the former having a better Premier League record than the Australian.
Postecoglou’s record in the English top flight was ruined last season following what was a shocking campaign from Spurs.
| Coach | Matches | Won | Lost | Drawn | Points | PPG |
| Ange Postecoglou | 76 | 31 | 11 | 34 | 104 | 1.37 |
| Nuno Espirito Santo | 184 | 72 | 45 | 67 | 261 | 1.42 |
The North London club finished 17th during the 2024/25 season, and that is sure to be a concern for the Forest supporters.
Postecoglou’s attacking style was also subject to plenty of criticism during his spell at Spurs, and there will be further question marks as to whether Forest’s current squad would suit that sort of system.
