'He's an excellent player': Pep Guardiola is a major fan of midfielder Tottenham are reportedly trying to sign
Tottenham reportedly have joined Arsenal in the race to sign Ruben Neves, who has many admirers including Pep Guardiola.
The Portugal international could be set to leave Wolves in the summer, with a new contract still not signed which would keep the playmaker at Molineux.
He is a Champions League standard player who has stuck with Wolves since they were in the Championship, and it is no surprise there is interest in his services.
Neves has arguably had the best season of his career under Bruno Lage at Molineux, but their push for Europe has lost momentum of late.
Arsenal have apparently confirmed their interest in Neves, along with Barcelona, whose financial troubles are of course well known.
Former Barca boss Guardiola said of Neves, in 2019, as per Football.London: “He’s an excellent player, but there are many clubs in the world, many holding midfielders in the world, and most of them can play here.
“That’s not the point. Most of them are under contracts. A month ago, I started reading: ‘Ruben Neves, £100 million.’ That is not going to happen, we are not going to pay £100 million for a holding midfielder.
“Of course, in all departments in the club, we have in every position four or five or six options—depending on age, what we believe and, of course, the price.”
Neves has the quality to play in a Guardiola team and City do now need to replace Fernandinho, who is leaving at the end of the season.
If Spurs or Arsenal can offer Champions League football, they would put Neves on the stage he deserves, but Wolves are not under pressure to sell yet and could demand a huge sum.
It is no surprise that Pep is a fan and Neves is a player with his best years ahead of him, who will also hope to shine at the World Cup in Qatar later this year.
