‘He should stay’: Paul Merson urges 24-year-old to stay at Liverpool, thinks he’ll play a lot next season

Paul Merson has urged Liverpool defender Joe Gomez to stay at Anfield beyond the summer transfer window amid all the rumours surrounding his future.

The 24-year-old was once a mainstay in Liverpool’s defence alongside Virgil van Dijk. He was very impressive for the Reds as well, but a terrible injury last season really cost him.

Gomez has now fallen down the pecking order at Liverpool. He has played just a little over 100 minutes of football in the Premier League this term, most of which have come at right-back, which isn’t his natural position.

The Englishman will have a decision to make about his future this summer. Merson, however, believes he shouldn’t even consider leaving Liverpool.

Paul Merson: Joe Gomez should stay at Liverpool

Ahead of Liverpool’s game against West Ham in the Premier League this weekend, Merson wrote in his column on Sportskeeda: “Joe Gomez is another player who has been talked about a lot in recent weeks, with his lack of game time an obvious issue at the moment.

“He won’t be short of suitors and the decision will ultimately be his at the end of the season, but I do think he should stay at Liverpool.

“They are a really successful team and will compete on all fronts next season, so he will play enough games.”

Merson is right when he says Gomez will not be short of options in the summer.

The Englishman is a fantastic defender, knows the Premier League really well, is still only 24 and is versatile as well. Many clubs will be keeping an eye on him ahead of the summer, and it really won’t be a surprise to see him leave.

Gomez is currently behind Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate in the heart of Liverpool’s defence. We all know Jurgen Klopp doesn’t like changing his team regularly, which hurts the 24-year-old’s chances of regular game time next season if he ends up staying.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Gomez. Staying at a club as big as Liverpool is never a bad idea but if he wants to play every single week, he’ll have to look for a move elsewhere.
