Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with Djed Spence for a number of weeks now.

Indeed, there were reports in June claiming Spurs had struck a deal for the Middlesbrough talent.

However, those proved premature.

Now, there have been other conflicting reports over the past few days.

The Telegraph claimed that Tottenham were edging towards an agreement in principle for the 21-year-old.

However, Fabrizio Romano has denied that Spurs are closing in on Spence.

“Until Wednesday night, there is no final agreement between Tottenham and Middlesbrough for Djed Spence, despite what is being reported elsewhere,” he wrote on CaughtOffside.

“Negotiations have been going on for weeks, and Spence remains a top target. But this is not yet a deal completed or almost done.”

“Still quite a way from coming to an agreement”

Sami Mokbel of the Daily Mail, speaking on the Last Word on Spurs podcast, echoed Romano’s sentiments.

“The views I was getting from Tottenham today is that [the Djed Spence deal] wasn’t close at all and there’s still quite a way from coming to an agreement.”

However, Mokbel did drop a more positive claim. Namely that the player appears to have picked Spurs as his future destination.

“There was a little bit of concern at one point, I’m led to believe, that he was perhaps leaning towards staying with Nottingham Forest,” he said.

“I could see the merits in the way he was thinking. Because he would definitely be guaranteed starts at Nottingham Forest.

“He would definitely play there week in, week out. I think if you’re coming to Tottenham the set-up in class is so high that you kind of going into the unknown a little bit.

“There was a comfort at Nottingham Forest where he knew he’d be playing every week. But now I think he has picked Tottenham as his preferred destination.”

Spence is an “unbelievable, fantastic” player who looked a cut above for Nottingham Forest last season, helping them reach the Premier League.

While it may be frustrating that negotiations still seem to be going on, there’s still plenty of time for the Spence deal to get over the line.
