Harvey Barnes issues Aaron Ramsdale verdict after Arsenal win
Harvey Barnes has told Sky Sports (broadcast on 13/3; 18:50) that Aaron Ramsdale is a great goalkeeper and insisted that he needed something special to beat him after seeing his header saved by the Arsenal star on Sunday.
The Gunners made it back-to-back 2-0 wins over Leicester City this season. Thomas Partey and Alexandre Lacazette scored either side of the break to ensure that Arsenal strengthened their grip on a top-four spot in the Premier League.
Arsenal certainly deserved their win. But the Foxes had a window where they threatened to get themselves back into the contest. And no moment saw them come closer than when Barnes got a header on target 10 minutes before the break.
Brendan Rodgers certainly thought that the chance was going in. However, Ramsdale was able to get across and get a big hand to the effort. And ultimately, he ended the day with another clean sheet.
Barnes was full of praise for Ramsdale following the win for Arsenal.
“I don’t get many headers, I thought I caught it quite well,” he told Sky Sports. “But yeah, Aaron’s made a great save. He’s a great keeper, so it takes something special to beat him.”
Ramsdale continues to step up when Arsenal need him
Ramsdale probably would have been disappointed with himself had he not kept Barnes’ effort out. That is not anything to do with the quality of the header, but rather the standard he has set this season.
Ramsdale has been a revelation since joining Arsenal in the summer. Certainly, few could have foreseen just how well the Englishman would adapt following his move from Sheffield United.
He took little time to take the number one spot off of Bernd Leno. And it now appears that Leno is heading for the Emirates exit after falling to the periphery of the squad.
Ramsdale has cemented himself as a fan favourite at the Emirates. And he continues to back that up with brilliant performances and moments of real quality – with the save from Barnes’ header the latest.
