Journalist shares Leno stance on leaving Arsenal for Newcastle

Newcastle United have received a boost in their bid to sign Bernd Leno from Arsenal, with Christian Falk reporting on Twitter that the goalkeeper is interested in moving to Tyneside.

Leno has been linked with a move away from the Emirates throughout the January transfer window. Of course, he has spent much of this season as backup to Aaron Ramsdale.

Arsenal however, are on the verge of signing a new goalkeeper. Personal terms with Matthew Turner have been agreed. And with that, Leno could soon move on.

The German has reportedly told Mikel Arteta that he wants to leave. And Newcastle have discussed making a bid for the 29-year-old.

The Magpies may be prepared for a battle as they look to convince their targets to make a move this month. Eddie Howe’s men are currently fighting to stay in the Premier League.

But it does appear that Leno would be open to the move. Falk has claimed on Twitter that the Arsenal goalkeeper is interested in joining the Magpies.

It is a gamble to let Leno go and replace him with Turner. Admittedly, the latter is highly-rated and into double figures for international caps with the USMNT. He only made his debut last year.

But Arsenal have not always had the most success when signing backup goalkeepers in recent years. Alex Runarsson remains on the club’s books.

Leno is a fantastic understudy to have. Arteta has previously described him as ‘magnificent‘. And he has spent much of his time at the club as Arsenal’s first-choice goalkeeper.

But clearly, the Gunners are aware that he is not happy as a backup. And with no cup football left this season, Leno may be even more determined to move on.

It appears that Tyneside could be his next destination.
