Harry Kane once said 27-year-old winger is a 'joy to play with', now Spurs reportedly want to sign him

Tottenham are ahead of Arsenal in the chase to sign Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling, according to CBS journalist Ben Jacobs.

There has been talk about Sterling’s future for a while now, with Gunners manager Mikel Arteta obviously knowing the 27-year-old well from his time at City.

There was a time last summer when it looked like Sterling could resume his England partnership with Harry Kane at club level, but in a blue shirt.

Now, it seems that Sterling could come the other way, and it is worth looking back at praise from England captain Kane for the wideman he dovetails so well with for the Three Lions.

Harry Kane praised Sterling

After a 4-0 win over Bulgaria in September 2019, Kane told TalkSPORT of Sterling and fellow England wideman Marcus Rashford, who will be reportedly offered to Spurs by Manchester United in a swap for Kane: “It’s a joy to play with.

“Sometimes I can drop deep and let them run in behind. Sometimes I’ll just stay high and they can use their pace, use their skills, one vs one against the defence and I’ll be there for the crosses and the square balls.

“Raz put one on a plate for me today and then obviously Rash got a great penalty.

“It’s a pleasure to play with them and all the boys here. We’re all working for the same goal and doing well so far.”

Harry Kane praised Sterling then but he could easily have hailed his international teammate during Euro 2020 when he was England’s main goal threat.

The big question for Sterling is where he wants his career to go from here.

He is at a club which fights for every trophy going, but he is not always guaranteed to start every game, and has arguably dropped off a bit this season.

Tottenham are developing and looking to go to that next level, as indicated by Kane’s desire to join City last summer.

It is an interesting call and perhaps whoever gets the last remaining Champions League spot would have the edge in the race for Sterling, and tomorrow night’s north London derby is huge on that score.
