Gary Neville stunned Manchester United didn’t bid for Liverpool star Diaz

Gary Neville has suggested to The Gary Neville Podcast that he is disappointed that Manchester United were seemingly never in the running to sign Luis Diaz before his switch to Liverpool in January.

Diaz has been electric since arriving in the Premier League. Of course, there seemed to be a good chance that he may end up joining one of the Reds’ top-flight rivals.

Reports claimed that Tottenham made a £46 million bid for the Colombian. But all that bid seemed to do was inspire Liverpool to act to make sure that they did not miss out on Diaz.

It was the Reds who secured his signature. And they have been vindicated already. The 25-year-old has been absolutely outstanding. He has scored twice in the Premier League. And he was the star of the show as Liverpool won the Carabao Cup final.

Neville has already made his feelings on the former Porto man clear. However, he has now suggested that he is almost baffled that his old club did not make a move before Diaz joined Liverpool.

‘Unbelievable’

“It’s unbelievable. Diaz was going to Tottenham, he’s then gone to Liverpool, there’s not even been a mention of him going to Manchester United,” he told The Gary Neville Podcast.

“United are going to lose Cavani, at the end of the season, they are probably going to lose Pogba, they’ve lost Greenwood, Martial has gone to Sevilla probably going at the end of the season.

“You think they are going to need two or three at the end of the season. Then you watch that lad and he’s not had his best game tonight, but what a player he is. Tough, aggressive, works hard, creates chances, his work rate when they lose the ball is unbelievable, he sprints back.”

Liverpool the envy of many after another transfer masterstroke with Luis Diaz

Liverpool signed two first-team players this season: Diaz and Ibrahima Konaté. Admittedly, Konate has not played a lot since his arrival. But when he has, he has looked like a real star of the future.

The Reds’ approach to the transfer market has been superb in recent years. Naby Keita is probably the most recent player to struggle to live up to expectations. And that was a move Liverpool made in 2018, with the Reds parting with a hefty sum.

Diaz could be a game-changing signing for Liverpool. Many anticipated that they may struggle once Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino needed replacing.

But Diogo Jota is the first piece when that jigsaw needs rearranging. And Diaz now is most definitely the second.
