Gary Lineker reacts with 10-word tweet after hearing Arsenal want £100k-a-week star this summer

Gary Lineker has taken to Twitter to comment on reports Arsenal want James Maddison this summer, joking that a move to the Emirates would be a backward step for the attacking midfielder.

The Gunners appear to be conducting quite the overhaul of their squad in this window. Nuno Tavares has joined. Albert Sambi Lokonga and Ben White could reportedly follow.

They have been linked with a raft of further names. And one of those reportedly on Arsenal’s radar is Maddison.

It was previously claimed that the Gunners believe that there is a deal to be done. According to the report, he is on £100,000-a-week.

Leicester reportedly snubbed a £70 million bid for Maddison last year. And he enjoyed another impressive campaign, scoring eight and providing five assists.

So he will surely command an eye-watering sum if he does attract a bid from Mikel Arteta’s men in this window.

But Leicester-supporting Lineker has suggested on social media that Maddison should snub a move if the chance to move to the Emirates presents itself.

Here is how Lineker reacted to the links between Arsenal and Maddison…

Huge statement if Arsenal are able to sign James Maddison

As Lineker hints at, it would be a huge statement if Arsenal could land Maddison.

Leicester have been superb over the last few years, winning the FA Cup and qualifying for the Europa League last season.

And Maddison has been at the heart of their success. So Brendan Rodgers’s men are not going to let him leave without a fight.

Arsenal are obviously a massive club. They have the potential to get themselves back up the table really quickly. And they look to be making some seriously exciting moves in the window.

It will be interesting therefore, to see if Maddison agrees with Lineker that joining Arsenal would be a backward step.
