Former Premier League ace beat Arsenal 20 years ago, now he could haunt Mikel Arteta in the Carabao Cup

Arsenal make their entrance into the Carabao Cup, as they take on Port Vale in the third round of this year’s competition.

The Gunners have only won the competition twice, with the last triumph coming over 30 years ago now, a wait that Mikel Arteta will be looking to end.

While Arsenal will fancy their chances against Port Vale, the League One outfit won’t make it particularly easy.

The Valiants have already got one cup upset under their belts this season, beating Birmingham City in the second round.

As Arsenal make the trip, there is a chance they could be haunted by a former Premier League ace who beat the club 20 years ago on the pitch.

Darren Moore could haunt Arsenal 20 years after winning against the Gunners for West Brom

As Arsenal prepare to take on Port Vale, they face off with an old foe in the dugout, Darren Moore.

The 51-year-old is in charge of the Valiants, having taken over at the club back in 2024.

Relegation to League Two was swiftly followed by promotion back to League One, as the club look to grow further.

Moore is now looking to put together a cup run, and he isn’t unfamiliar with upsetting Arsenal.

The defender made six appearances against the Gunners back in his playing days, and he played a role in beating them in the Premier League.

When featuring for West Brom in 2005, Moore featured for 20 minutes in a 2-1 win at the Hawthorns, as Nwankwo Kanu and Darren Carter completed a comeback for the Baggies, after Philippe Senderos gave Arsenal the lead.

It was the only win Moore managed in his head-to-heads with Arsenal, as he made six appearances against the side.

Almost 20 years later, the defender could now haunt the Gunners on the cup stage.

If he is to land a win for Port Vale, that could put more pressure on the manager in the opposite dugout, Arteta.
