Fabrizio Romano shares update on Pedro Porro amid Tottenham and Chelsea links

Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea have both been heavily linked with a move to sign Sporting Lisbon defender Pedro Porro, and Fabrizio Romano has shared the latest on the situation.

Antonio Conte is desperate to sign a new right-wing-back, while Graham Potter is looking to strengthen in that area too. Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty have both struggled for Spurs, while Reece James has had his problems with injuries at Stamford Bridge.

Both London clubs could do with a player like Porro, but one of them is likelier than the other to get this deal done, claims Romano.

Fabrizio Romano: Tottenham are leading the race to sign Pedro Porro, not Chelsea

Journalist Simon Phillips told GiveMeSport earlier this week that Chelsea are in contact with Porro’s agent over a potential move in this month’s transfer window.

Ben Jacobs then claimed on the Last Word on Spurs channel that the Blues hijacking Tottenham’s deal to sign the defender is ‘very possible’.

Romano has now had his say on the situation. The journalist claimed that he has seen links about Porro and Chelsea, but he’s hearing from his sources that it’s Tottenham who are in the driving seat to sign the Sporting star.

He told GiveMeSport: “For Pedro Porro, Tottenham are the club leading the race.

“For Chelsea, we have many links, but at the moment, I’m told that the club who are actively working to sign Pedro Porro is Tottenham.”

Porro, who has been branded as a ‘dangerous’ player, has a release clause of €45 million (£40m), and Sporting are adamant that they will not let him go for anything less than that figure.

It seems clear at this point that whichever club wants to sign Porro will have to trigger his release clause to get him.

The 23-year-old, who was on Manchester City’s books for a few years, has been fantastic for Sporting. He is among the most talented right-backs of his age in Europe, and it’s only a matter of time before he joins a bigger club.

Moves to both Spurs and Chelsea should be attractive for young Porro, who never got an opportunity to play in England during his time as a Manchester City player.

Romano thinks Spurs are the favourites at this point, but whether they will trigger his release clause in the coming days remains to be seen.
