Fabrizio Romano says Tottenham really tried to hijack Barcelona’s move and sign 21-goal striker

Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur tried extremely hard to hijack Barcelona’s move to sign Vitor Roque last summer.

Spurs were very active in the summer transfer window, but the one area of the pitch that they didn’t strengthen was up front. Romano has now claimed that Roque was a key target for Tottenham for that number nine role, but they couldn’t get him.

Tottenham tried to hijack Barcelona’s move to sign Vitor Roque

Tottenham lost their skipper and talisman Harry Kane to Bayern Munich this summer, and they decided against replacing him with an out-and-out striker.

Ange Postecoglou opted to move Son Heung-min to the number nine position, and the South Korean has done a remarkable job there.

Things have worked out for Tottenham with Son up top, but if Romano is to be believed, Tottenham’s real wish was to sign Athletico Paranaense striker Vitor Roque.

The teenager, who has scored 21 goals this season, is one of the most admired young players in South America, and a number of clubs wanted to sign him in the summer. Barcelona, however, won the race in the end, but Romano has revealed that Tottenham made a very serious push to hijack the Catalans’ deal.

He said on Kick: “Vitor Roque is going to be a key player for Barca. Barca did a big fight to sign Vitor Roque. Many clubs wanted Vitor Roque.

“I can tell you behind the scenes that Tottenham tried till the end of the story with Barcelona, till they signed the final page of the contract to hijack the deal for Vitor Roque. Tottenham were there. Tottenham were really strong and serious on that opportunity.”

Tottenham should sign a new striker in 2024

Son Heung-min has been Tottenham’s main man this season, scoring nine goals and providing two assists in 14 appearances in the Premier League.

He has been sensational, but Spurs can’t just rely on him. They need to bring in an out-and-out centre-forward in one of the next two transfer windows, and they have been linked with quite a few strikers.

Brentford star Ivan Toney is one of them, and there is a big chance he could leave the Bees next month. However, he will cost a lot of money and could be out of Spurs’ reach. Another striker Spurs like is Brighton’s Evan Ferguson. The youngster is a phenomenal talent, but he too will cost a fortune.

It will be interesting to see who Spurs will go after when they decide to address the top end of their pitch. As things stand, a move for a striker seems more likely to happen in the summer.
