Fabrizio Romano has now claimed that there were ‘contacts’ between Arsenal and Mason Mount before he joined Manchester United.
The Gunners were on the market for a new midfielder last summer. They were linked with a number of names, and Mount was one of them. However, he decided to join Manchester United in the end.

Fabrizio Romano says Arsenal tried to sign Mason Mount before he joined Manchester United
Mason Mount was a wanted man last summer after it became clear that he was leaving Chelsea.
The Englishman is an excellent player. He can play as an attacking midfielder and also as a number eight, and it was no surprise that many teams wanted him.
Liverpool were among those who were heavily linked, but Arsenal wanted him too. Numerous reports claimed that, and Fabrizio Romano has now shared what he knows.
The journalist revealed that there were contacts between the Gunners and Mount over a move to the Emirates in April last year.
Arsenal tried their luck then, but Mount moved to Manchester United in the end for an initial fee of £55 million (Sky Sports).
Romano said in his Daily Briefing: “My understanding is that there were contacts with both Arsenal and Liverpool while his situation remained uncertain at Chelsea, but this was not in the summer, it was around April when clubs started to ask about Mount deal conditions.
“That’s it, but Man United was always the priority for the player.”

Arsenal signed Kai Havertz instead and he has been brilliant
Arsenal wanted to replace Granit Xhaka in midfield last summer after he left the club to join Bayer Leverkusen.
Mason Mount was probably looked at for that role, but after the Englishman went to Manchester United, the Gunners signed Kai Havertz from Chelsea.
United’s move was hailed by everyone at the time, while Arsenal’s decision was ridiculed. The Gunners, however, are having the last laugh now.
Havertz has been excellent for Arsenal over the last few months. He had a slow start to life as a Gunner, but his performances recently have made him one of the first names on the team sheet.
We’re sure Mikel Arteta wouldn’t be too fussed about missing out on Mount now.
