Everton were keen to sign Newcastle United youngster Elliot Anderson, but he was never for sale.

Ben Jacobs, writing for Give Me Sport, provided more details on the 20-year-old’s summer plans.

The start of the Premier League is just a couple of days away and after nearly two months of transfer action, managers are now finalising their line-ups for the opening weekend.

At Newcastle, Eddie Howe has a completely new challenge ahead of him as he tries to balance a Premier League and Champions League campaign.

Sean Dyche has a totally different prospect ahead of him as climbing away from the bottom three has to be the main aim.

It turns out that both managers have identified the same player to help them achieve those goals.

Everton were keen on signing Elliot Anderson from Newcastle, but he looks like he’s got a key role to play at St. James’ Park this season.

The ‘phenomenal’ youngster has featured heavily in pre-season and could start against Aston Villa this weekend.

Everton wanted Newcastle youngster Anderson

Writing for Give Me Sport, Jacobs said: ‘Newcastle were clear to several Championship clubs that they didn’t want to loan Anderson out this season.

‘Luton and Everton have also tracked Anderson, but he is not for sale.’

The prospect of loaning out Anderson to the Championship could have potentially appealed if Newcastle had recruited more heavily in the summer.

However, only three senior players have been signed and Sandro Tonali is the only midfielder to join their ranks.

It means Anderson could play a key role in the first few weeks of the season, especially as he’s looked like one of Newcastle’s fittest players throughout the summer.

Everton have been even less active in the transfer market which doesn’t bode well for the upcoming campaign.

Sean Dyche will be glad to have had a full pre-season with the squad, but will also be keen to strengthen his side before the transfer window closes.

Anderson would have been an exceptional signing for Everton, but Newcastle were never going to let arguably their best youngster go.

The 20-year-old will be hoping this year is his breakout campaign as England and Scotland fight over his international future.
