What Semme Lammens’ £18.2m move to Man United means for Emi Martinez and Andre Onana

Semme Lammens has agreed a deal with Manchester United on transfer deadline day, with the goalkeeper set to travel to England to complete his move.

It was always going to be a busy deadline day for Manchester United, with a shot-stopper the number one necessity for the Red Devils.

Andre Onana has been a bit of a disaster at Old Trafford, so Ruben Amorim is now keen to get a new shot-stopper between the sticks.

This seemingly comes in the form of Semme Lammens, who is joining in an £18m move from Royal Antwerp.

But with Emiliano Martinez rumoured and Andre Onana at the club, what does it mean for that duo?

Exclusive: Emi Martinez to Man United is off, Andre Onana may leave

TBR Football can exclusively reveal, through chief correspondent Graeme Bailey, that Emi Martinez’s deal looks off as it proves “too complicated,” while Onana could leave in the dying hours of the window.

Bailey states: “Martinez’s deal too complicated and United have moved for Lammens, as he was of interest elsewhere.

“This has been described to me as ‘trusting their own eyes’ – they have liked him all summer.

“Deal has been all but done with player and club all summer – was just waiting for United to push the button, and now they have. What does this mean for Andre Onana? Still a very good chance he moves at some point.”

United have seemingly chosen their shot-stopper – but was it the right option?

Semme Lammens is a risk for Manchester United

Given that Onana has completely lost his confidence, Lammens is a good option for United. He had a real breakout season for Antwerp, but is this transferable to the crucible that is Old Trafford?

The deal doesn’t make much sense as a number one, and Lammens should really have been brought in as an understudy.

That said, the need for a keeper was a big one, and Amorim may have just wanted to get a deal done.
