‘Exceptional’ player left out of club’s pre-season opener, amid reports he’s in advanced talks with Tottenham

Tottenham will be hoping to sign Djed Spence in the coming days as they look to bring an end to one of the window’s longest running sagas so far.

It’s looked for all the world that Spence would be a Tottenham player already. Just a few weeks back it was claimed Middlesbrough were preparing themselves to sell Spence to Spurs, while the player himself is thought to be more than open to signing, with personal terms no problem.

And while reports yesterday claimed there is no chance of Spence being in Tottenham’s squad for their pre-season tour of South Korea, there was a hint last night that a deal might be getting closer.

That’s because Middlesbrough, despite fielding two XI’s against York City in a friendly of their own, found no space for Spence in the squad at all. It was a clear message from Chris Wilder that the club expect to lose Spence, given he gave 22 players minutes in a 3-2 win.

It seems very much that this is a case of Tottenham simply getting a fee agreed with Boro for Spence. And if they can do that, then it seems we’ll all be able to draw a line under matters.

TBR’s View: Wilder Clearly Happy To See Spence Go

You feel like Chris Wilder might have called Spence back last season if he was that bothered and he’s hardly put up a fight this summer in his pressers when it comes to the full-back.

Last night – unless he had a knock or a fitness issue of course – was a clear message that Wilder expects to see the ‘exceptional‘ Spence go. If he was planning on playing him next season, surely he’d have been included in the squad at least?

Tottenham need to get this deal done basically, or it risks being dragged out.
