Serie A side Salernitana’s sporting director Morgan De Sanctis has confirmed that his side are keen to sign Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pape Matar Sarr on loan this month.

Spurs signed the talented Senegal international from Metz 18 months ago for a fee reported to be £14.5 million (Mail). He was loaned back to the French side for the whole of last season, but Antonio Conte chose to keep him at the club in the summer.

Sarr, hailed as a player who ‘can do everything’ by Cristian Stellini, has been given a couple of opportunities recently and he has impressed.

Although Conte decided to keep Sarr in the summer, the Italian didn’t give him a single opportunity in the first half of the season. He made the bench on 12 occasions before the World Cup, but he wasn’t brought on once.

The World Cup break gave Conte an opportunity to work with the likes of Sarr, and Alasdair Gold revealed recently that the Italian was seriously impressed with the midfielder in training.

That proved to be accurate as Conte handed Sarr his debut against Aston Villa on Boxing Day and followed that up with another opportunity off the bench against Crystal Palace midweek.

The youngster’s performances seem to have caught the eye as De Sanctis has now come out and claimed that he wants to sign Sarr on loan for Salernitana.

The director said, as quoted by The Express: “Sarr is the kind of player we need, he has the skills we want in that position.”

Fabrizio Romano revealed yesterday that ‘Salernitana are in talks to sign Pape Matar Sarr on loan,’ but discussions are still in the early stages. The Senegal midfielder’s current contract at Spurs expires in the summer of 2026.

Conte wants to keep him at Spurs

One of the big criticisms of Conte is the fact that he always prefers experience over youth. That has limited the likes of Sarr to very few opportunities, but it looks like the Italian is more open to giving them game time now.

After working with the youngster every day for a few weeks during the World Cup break, Conte was happy with what he saw. He then came out and claimed that he doesn’t want to send any of them out on loan as they are capable of helping the squad in the coming months.

The Italian said: “We exploited the period of the World Cup to work with these young players to improve themselves under the tactical aspect and physical aspect.

“Now they stay with us in the squad. I don’t want to send these young players on loan because the league is very difficult. We have to play Champions League, we have to play FA Cup. I think these young players can stay here to help us face these three competitions.”
