Micah Richards and Gary Lineker are still blown away by how good Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane was against Manchester City at the Etihad back in February.

Spurs are now fourth in the Premier League table and are arguably the favourites to qualify for next season’s Champions League ahead of Arsenal, West Ham and Manchester United.

However, this was not always the case. Antonio Conte’s men had suffered three consecutive defeats in the Premier League a couple of months ago and the Spurs boss looked like he was on his way out.

Thankfully for Tottenham fans, Kane stepped up in the following game and put up one of the best individual performances we’ve seen in the Premier League for a long, long time. That helped turned his side’s fortunes around.

BBC pundits: Harry Kane vs Man City was the greatest performance in PL history

On the BBC Match of the Day Top 10 podcast, Richards and Lineker discussed Harry Kane’s phenomenal performance for Tottenham against Manchester City in February.

Richards asked Lineker: “Did you see him (Kane) against Man City the other week?”

The ex-Spurs man replied: “I think it’s one of the greatest centre forward displays I’ve seen.”

Richards went a step further and claimed: “I think it’s the greatest number nine performance I’ve seen in the Premier League.”

Lineker quickly agreed: “I wouldn’t disagree with that, it was extraordinary.”

We don’t know if Harry Kane’s display for Tottenham against Manchester City was the greatest since the start of the Premier League, but it has got to be up there with the very best.

Kane, 28, was simply incredible against the defending Premier League champions and it has to be said that he was unlucky not to get a hat-trick.

His performance showed exactly why Manchester City were willing to pay a fortune for him last summer and it won’t be a surprise if they revive their interest again at the end of this season.

Conte’s priority in the summer will be to keep hold of Kane, and qualifying for the Champions League may just be one way to do it. However, if they drop out of the top four, we will likely have another transfer saga.
