David Ornstein says 'incredible' Djed Spence's preference is to sign for Tottenham Hotspur
The Athletic’s David Ornstein has claimed that Djed Spence prefers a move to Tottenham Hotspur ahead of all the other clubs interested in signing him.
The Middlesbrough defender, who spent last season on loan at Nottingham Forest, has been heavily linked with a number of clubs in the Premier League over the past few months. However, Spence seems to have made up his mind now, and he only wants Spurs.
David Ornstein says Djed Spence wants to join Tottenham
Ornstein spoke on The Athletic UK’s YouTube channel yesterday, and the journalist made it clear that North London is the likeliest destination for the Boro defender, who has been branded as ‘incredible’.
He said: “The preference of Djed Spence, the Middlesbrough right-back who was on loan at Nottingham Forest last season, is to sign permanently for Tottenham Hotspur.
“It’s not done, they need to agree a fee, Middlesbrough and Tottenham. They are talking, the negotiations are ongoing and there is no agreement as things stand and there are lots of clubs interested in him. However, the preference of this 21-year-old England under-21 international is to join Tottenham.
“The lure of Champions League football under Antonio Conte is pretty persuasive in his mind. We’re not saying this is going to happen quickly, it might drag on, but I do think that’s his most likely destination, it’s where he would prefer to go.”
Tottenham confirmed the signing of Ivan Persic not too long ago and the Croatian is expected to start at left wing-back. That side of the pitch is sorted for Conte now, but there’s work still to be done on the opposite side.
Emerson Royal hasn’t done enough for Spurs since his move from Barcelona last summer, while Matt Doherty – despite a few good performances – isn’t the top-quality right wing-back Conte wants.
Spence really would be an excellent signing for Tottenham. He was absolutely magnificent for Forest last term, and the fact that he’s still only 21 means he’ll only get better in the coming years.
Ornstein says Spence wants to join Tottenham this summer. Now, it’s up to Spurs to reach an agreement with Boro to seal the deal.
