David Ornstein reveals how Arsenal could still affect Liverpool’s Martin Zubimendi deal

Martin Zubimendi to Liverpool is the transfer story making most of the headlines at the moment.

The Real Sociedad midfielder is said to be a key target for Liverpool, and a deal appears to be edging closer.

However, a deal to sign Zubimendi isn’t done, and it’s not going to be easy.

Indeed, Zubimendi has always been a difficult player to sign, as Arsenal know having courted him for 18 months at this point.

Liverpool appear to be making progress on Zubimendi, but according to David Ornstein, speaking on the Walk On Podcast, the terms around this deal could be affected by some other transfer business involving Arsenal.

Indeed, Arsenal are currently looking to sign Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad, and Ornstein says that if that deal is done, Real Sociedad will be even less inclined to sell Zubimendi on the cheap.

Arsenal could affect Liverpool’s Martin Zubimendi deal

Ornstein shared how Arsenal’s move for Zubimendi could affect the Zubimendi to Liverpool deal.

“The problem has been two-fold. There’s a release clause in his contract and it needs to be paid in full, unless Real Sociedad are willing to negotiate a lower fee,” Ornstein said.

“There has been no sign of that to his point. If they are to lose someone like Mikel Merino, his teammate, and get a decent fee for him then the financial necessity to sell Zubimendi will be even lower.”

Liverpool can still land Martin Zubimendi

While Arsenal’s move for Merino could affect the Zubimendi deal, Liverpool can still get this one done without any issues if they wish to.

Indeed, the Spaniard has a release clause in his contract, and if Liverpool need to, they can skip club-to-club negotiations entirely and trigger this clause.

Arsenal could affect Liverpool’s move for Zubimendi, but the Gunners may not be able to stop this move entirely.
