Darren Bent has claimed on talkSPORT that he would much rather sign Romelu Lukaku for Arsenal than Gabriel Jesus.
The Gunners have been heavily linked with a move for the Manchester City star over the last few weeks. He is reportedly Mikel Arteta’s priority target this summer, and there’s a good chance this deal will be done in the very near future.
Arsenal fans are delighted that Jesus may be leading the line for the Gunners next season. Most people think he’d be a phenomenal signing for Arteta’s side, and we agree too.
However, Bent feels 29-year-old Chelsea star Lukaku would actually be better than Jesus at the Emirates.
Darren Bent says Romelu Lukaku would be better for Arsenal than Gabriel Jesus
Speaking on talkSPORT this week, the Englishman said: “I’d take Lukaku at Arsenal 100 per cent. (I’d be) over the moon if we got Lukaku.
“I look at Lukaku and I think he wants to go somewhere where he’s going to feel most loved. At Inter Milan last season, he was fantastic, he scored a lot of goals and felt real passion from the Inter fans.
“The fact he has taken a 25 per cent pay cut, it almost looks like he can’t get out of this country quick enough.”
When put on the spot and asked who he’d rather sign for Arsenal between the Chelsea man and Jesus, Bent immediately replied: “Lukaku, I would. I’ve seen him score goals. He’s in the 100 club!”
TBR View:
Lukaku is certainly a magnificent player on his day, there’s no debating that.
The Belgian, branded as ‘exceptional’ by his international boss Roberto Martinez, has played over 650 games for club and country over the years and has scored over 330 goals. That is an impressive return, and he’d certainly be a good signing for Arsenal.
However, Jesus is younger, quicker and more versatile than Lukaku, and the Brazilian’s work rate is much better than that of the Chelsea striker as well.
Bent is entitled to his choice, but we’re with Mikel Arteta here, we’d much rather have a young and hungry Jesus at Arsenal over a 29-year-old Lukaku, who has failed to meet the expectations in each of his last two seasons in England – first at Manchester United and most recently under Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea.
