Danny Murphy disagrees what Wayne Rooney has said about Florian Wirtz, ‘you’ve not been watching’

Florian Wirtz has had a difficult start to life at Liverpool, but Danny Murphy has disagreed with Wayne Rooney’s assessment of the midfielder.

Wirtz joined Liverpool during the summer for £116million, and with such a hefty price tag came a high level of expectation from the footballing world about what he would offer the team.

Despite being a regular in the Liverpool line-up, the German international has failed to register a single goal or assist since the Community Shield final.

This has led to increased criticism of him and questions about whether Arne Slot should consider temporarily dropping Wirtz from the team.

Danny Murphy believes Florian Wirtz fits into Liverpool “as a 10”

Liverpool might have made an impressive start to the season regarding results, but the performances haven’t always been convincing due to the open nature of all their games.

Liverpool conceding so many goals has led to some pundits speculating that Wirtz is negatively impacting the team, with Rooney having claimed he “damages the balance.”

However, Murphy disagrees, and he explained on talkSPORT exactly where he thinks Wirtz fits into the starting line-up.

“Well, if you can’t see where he gets in the team, you’ve not been watching Liverpool. He gets in the team as a 10.

“The reason they brought him in is because they don’t want a Szoboszlai-like player in that position. They want a more creative player, that’s why they brought him in.

“The fact he’s not doing it right now, people will go towards Szoboszlai as a selection because he gives them the athleticism and the tenacity because they think that’s what’s the proof.”

Florian Wirtz hasn’t replicated his Bayer Leverkusen form at Liverpool

There was a lot of excitement surrounding Wirtz joining Liverpool due to his brilliant season in Germany for Bayer Leverkusen last season.

The creative midfielder was a consistent threat in the final third for the Bundesliga side, which led to him catching the eye of the footballing world.

Unfortunately, he hasn’t come close to replicating that this season, as fans are still waiting for his first goal contribution in the Premier League.

Despite that, Slot has continued to show his full backing of the midfielder, and he praised Wirtz when speaking to the press after Liverpool’s latest game against Galatasaray.

“The focus is always on the new signings, which is normal if you see the money we spent.

“I think Florian, especially in the first half, was involved in the chances we created. He was many times involved in dangerous situations tonight.”
