Newcastle United have had a number of stars play for their countries in the recent international break, though one in particular has earned plaudits from teammates.

The Magpies have seen the likes of Anthony Elanga, Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali feature for their countries to add to their growing list of international caps.

Meanwhile, new signing Nick Woltemade grabbed his first Germany strike with the only goal in a 1-0 win over Northern Ireland in Belfast on Monday evening, to give the Euro 2024 hosts a huge boost in terms of World Cup 2026 qualification.

However, it’s the top performances by Anthony Gordon for England that will give Newcastle staff the most confidence going forward, and his outings have been praised by his Tyneside teammates.

Newcastle and England teammates praise Anthony Gordon for Latvia performance on Tuesday

Gordon started for England away in Latvia on Tuesday evening, knowing that a win over the Baltics would ensure qualification for next summer’s World Cup in North America.

A resounding 5-0 win means England are the first European outfit to qualify for the tournament, winning every game in their group so far and without even conceding a goal in their six games, scoring 18.

The former Everton starlet was the man to kickstart that on Tuesday, as he picked up the ball out wide before drifting into space and wrapping a shot into the bottom corner just before the half-hour mark.

Posting on Instagram, the Scouse native was inundated with comments from his current Newcastle and England teammates.

Fellow winger Anthony Elanga commented a ‘stars in eyes’ emoji, whilst Magpies captain Bruno Guimaraes commented with three ‘fire’ emojis. However, it was his England teammates that commented who waxed lyrical.

Declan Rice commented a ‘lightning bolt’ emoji, Ezri Konsa commented a ‘love heart’, whilst Morgan Gibbs-White named the Magpies winger as ‘top’.

However, it was Three Lions attacker Morgan Rogers who reserved Gordon the most praise, commenting ‘On fire’ in response to his post.

It will be nice for Gordon to see the camaraderie at both club and country level if he is to progress.

Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon is making a huge case to start for England at World Cup 2026

There is no doubting that England have a lot of talent on the left-flank, with a number of stars vying to make the first-team shirt their own before the World Cup next summer.

And it appears that, so far under manager Thomas Tuchel, Gordon is that man.

Marcus Rashford has started the season well for both Barcelona and England, whilst other options such as Jack Grealish are knocking on the door, with the Manchester City loanee having excelled in the early parts of the league campaign at Everton.

New Arsenal signing Eberechi Eze also staked his claim with the fifth goal in Riga on Tuesday evening, in a strike that was all too similar to Gordon’s opener. Other players such as Morgan Rogers and Noni Madueke are also capable of playing on the left.

But Gordon has started in four of England’s last five matches, notching his second goal for the country against Latvia after a strike against Republic of Ireland last season.

He only got one minute for England at Euro 2024, but that will change in the summer if he carries on at club and country level.
