Tottenham Hotspur star Eric Dier was snubbed by England boss Gareth Southgate yesterday, and Ryan Mason has delivered his honest verdict on the decision.

The Three Lions manager announced his squad for England’s upcoming Nations League game against Hungary, Germany and Italy next month. Almost every Tottenham fan expected Dier to get into the squad, but Southgate had other ideas.

Arsenal star Ben White, Wolves’ Conor Coady, AC Milan’s Fikayo Tomori, Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi and regulars Harry Maguire and John Stones are the centre-halves who have been called up.

That has left no place for Dier, and Mason, like many Spurs fans, is far from pleased.

It really was a shock to see Dier not get a call up after how good he was for Spurs over the last few weeks.

Southgate was asked for an explanation and he said, as per Football London: “I agree Eric has played very well for Spurs. We know Eric, we don’t know some of these youngsters so we felt these are good matches to find out more about them.

“Eric is obviously playing in the middle of a three. It’s a very specific position he’s playing in and the team have been excellent at the end of the season.”

Mason just couldn’t believe some of the names on Southgate’s list of defenders in the England squad, and he took to Instagram to tell the world who the best English centre-back currently is.

“Best English CB in the prem this season,” Mason wrote in his Instagram Stories.

TBR View:

Dier has every reason to feel hard done by.

The Tottenham defender has been absolutely incredible, especially in the final few weeks of the campaign, and he played a massive part in helping Spurs qualify for the Champions League.

Harry Maguire has been woeful for Manchester United this term, and an argument can easily be made that Dier deserves a place in the England squad ahead of the 29-year-old.

However, it’s Southgate’s call and he has decided against it, which is a real shame.
