Eric Dier shares what has surprised him about Antonio Conte
Eric Dier has shared with the Guardian what has surprised him about Antonio Conte since he arrived at Tottenham Hotspur, explaining that the Italian is very approachable away from the pitch.
Conte is well on his way towards transforming Tottenham. A point on the final day of the season is all that is needed for Spurs to ensure that they will be back in the Champions League next year.
The job Conte has done has been remarkable. And one of the real success stories from his tenure has been Dier.
It was always interesting that Dier kept his place under every manager despite his form dipping in the last few years. And Conte was no different, quickly determining that the England international was perfect for the middle of his back three.
In fact, Conte backed Dier to become one of the world’s best in that position early in his tenure. And he has certainly looked a different player.
It appears that the pair have a great relationship away from the pitch. Dier has clearly taken a lot from Conte. And, as he explained the impact he has had, the defender shared what has caught him off-guard since his appointment.
“There is a different work ethic in the building, a different discipline. He has incredible experience and you feed off his personality, his confidence in his work. It’s hard not to believe it yourself because he has so much belief in what he does,” he said, as reported by the Guardian.
“Training, meetings and matches are 100%. What has surprised me is that outside of that he is very approachable, very easy to speak with. He likes to have a laugh.”
What has surprised Dier about Conte
The Tottenham players are clearly loving playing under Conte. Of course, results have a lot to do with that. He is looking set to guide them back into the Champions League.
But the relationship he has with the players also looks to be crucial. Dier says it is a surprise. But Conte has shown that he is up for a laugh too.
Famously, he had a pretend boxing match with Lautaro Martinez in training while at Inter Milan to poke fun at a rift that seemed to emerge after the striker had taken a substitution badly.
Obviously, there will be no laughs if Spurs throw away fourth spot on Sunday. But under Conte, it is hard to see Tottenham having any problem wrapping things up with little fuss.
