'Dropping really deep': BBC pundit far from impressed with £60m Tottenham and Newcastle target today

James Maddison has been linked with both Tottenham and Newcastle this window and was on display against Arsenal today at The Emirates.

The attacking midfielder seems to be one of the most in-demand players as the window heads into its final few weeks.

For Maddison, it could be an anxious wait when it comes to his future, with the midfielder likely to be keen on playing Champions League or Europa League football and pushing his way into the World Cup picture. However, for much of the game against Arsenal today, he was a peripheral figure, struggling to get involved.

“Maddison is dropping really deep, if I’m Mikel Arteta I’m delighted he’s so far away on the halfway line. He’s not in that No.10 position causing problem,” Brown said on BBC comms.

Of course, Maddison would improve as the game went on and scored in the second half as Leicester actually came back into the game. Whether or not he did enough to warrant talk of a £60m move away, mind, was open for debate.

In the end, Maddison was outshone by the excellent Gabriel Jesus. Interestingly, the Brazilian also impressed the onlooking Brown, who absolutely loved his first goal.

TBR’s View: Maddison Still Leicester’s Best Player

Despite losing 4-2 and despite having a frustrating time of things for the first hour or so, Maddison was still the best Leicester player against Arsenal in the main.

The midfielder showed touches of class at times and then got his goal as well. In the end, it wasn’t enough and the performance of Jesus did indeed outshine everything else on show.

Whether or not Tottenham or Newcastle are still looking on remains to be seen. But Maddison might need to do more in the coming weeks to really convince a team to pay big money.
