Aston Villa have reportedly held tentative talks with Pedro Goncalves’ agent, with the midfielder on Tottenham’s radar this month.

The Sporting Lisbon star has been linked with a Premier League move for what feels like forever, with the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool and the aforementioned Tottenham all reportedly interested in Goncalves.

With rumours suggesting last year that Spurs will be giving Goncalves ‘special attention’ in the January market, the north London side looked like early favourites to land the 25-year-old this month.

However, according to O Jogo, Villa have now been in contact with the midfielder’s agent, with West Ham also asking for information on Goncalves.

With a release clause worth €80m (£69m), it’s virtually impossible for Villa to pull off a deal as big as Goncalves with so little time left in the January transfer window.

However, Villa’s approach could hint towards a move in the summer, where UEFA Champions League qualification could give Unai Emery’s side the financial boost needed to sign Goncalves.

Barring any major injuries, Villa look on course to finish in the Premier League top-four under Emery, a feat that few fans would have expected heading into this season.

And for the summer, Champions League money and participation in the competition could greatly expand the net Villa can fish in, with Goncalves a legitimate target.

Whilst £69m is still a huge fee with Tottenham still likely to move for Goncalves, Villa have shown they’re canny operators in the market when it comes to players they’re eager to sign.

And the Portuguese midfielder could be just that, with Goncalves seemingly destined for the Premier League if all goes to plan in the coming months for Villa.
